Below are the outlines for the topics covered each half-term.  As these are developed for our new curriculum they will be added.  There are also links to the associated Curriculum Maps, which outline the key objectives covered, both within topic and in stand alone lessons.

Autumn 1 - World War 2

During this term we will be studying WWII with particular focus on The Battle of Britain and what life would have been like to be an evacuee in WW2 Britain. Using paint and crayon, the children will use the Spitfire and Messerschmitt as their inspiration for art. As part of the topic, the children will visit Eden Camp where they will be immersed in a holistic approach to their topic experiencing everything from what a bombed street in the Blitz would look and sound like, to how little they would have eaten under rationing. In Design and Technology, the children will build a two thirds scale Anderson shelter as part of a WW2 workshop where they will also be building a six man bunk.

Autumn 2 - The Gunpowder Plot then Natural Disasters

The children will firstly study ‘The Gunpowder Plot’ and its effect on modern history. This will also be the stimulus for our artwork. Firework and bonfire pictures will be designed and made using coloured tissue, fabrics and twigs. The second part of our topic will be to study of natural disasters around the world featuring volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and avalanches. The children will be given the opportunity to create an erupting volcano and will look at case studies of these natural disasters. Using an explanation text in literacy, they will demonstrate their understanding of why humans risk life and limb living in close proximity to an active volcano.

Spring 1 - The Human Body

This half term the children will be developing their understanding of the human anatomy and its circulatory system comparing it to the heating system in their house. The children will also participate in a school trip to the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds to study the advances in modern medicine and learn about prominent physicians responsible for bringing about these changes. As a practical science afternoon, the children will be given the opportunity to handle and view a pig’s heart and lungs. They will be able to see the four main chambers of the heart and the blood vessels entering and exiting the heart. Our literacy work will focus on the spoken word and narrative.
